This magnificent originally hand-colored engraved map is from Pieter Mortier’s
Atlas nouveau contenant toutes les parties du monde. The work was published in Paris circa 1696.

The map was based on the work of French cartographer, Alexis-Hubert Jaillot. He modeled his map after the map of Nicolas Sanson published in 1656.

Pieter Mortier (1669-1711) was an Dutch mapmaker, engraver, and bookseller. He was the son of a French refugee. He was granted a privilege to publish French maps in the Netherlands in 1690, and printed his first work there in 1693. Mortier’s family continued to publish and sell books in the Dutch Republic for three generations.

Condition report:

The work is in good to very good condition overall. There is some light mottled toning. There is a closed tear at the lower fold. There is a very small hole to the paper at the lower plate mark just within the border. There may be a few minor imperfections to be expected with age.
