Description

This strong map engraving is from the Dutch edition of Nicolas d’Abbeville Sanson’s
L’Amérique en plusieurs cartes et en divers traittés de géographie et d’histoire. The work was published in Paris in 1657 for the author.

This is a fine example of Sanson’s influential map of Canada, emphasizing regions of primary interest to the French. It shows from the Hudson Bay to Virginia and from Lake of the Puans (modern day Lake Michigan) to the islands of Newfoundland. This map is the first atlas to depict Lake Erie—or “le Chat”—in its correct shape. The reference to “le Chat” alludes to the panther-like qualities attributed to the local Indigenous peoples, who were feared by Europeans.

Notably, Sanson’s modifications to the East Coast are often overlooked. He introduced Long Island, correctly positioned New Amsterdam, and improved the representation of the Delaware River, which is identified with the now-defeated Swedish colony, reflecting the French perception of territorial boundaries. Sanson’s map concentrates on French possessions and interests; although Lake Erie is correctly shaped, it is placed nearly 2½° too far south, effectively expanding the territory claimed by the French.

The present example is the first state of this map as described by Burden. It exerted a major influence on regional cartography and were not surpassed until Guillaume de L’Isle’s
Carte du Canada of 1703.

Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667) was oft considered the father of French cartography. He produced over 300 maps in his career, noted for their sharp style and research. He first introduced the atlas / map featured here in 1658, with his son, Guillame Sanson, continuing this publication posthumously.
