This finely illustrated volume is Marc Chagall’s
Lettres d’Hivernage. It was published in Paris by Editions du Seuil in 1973. The poetry included was the work of Leopold Sedar Senghor. This was from a limited edition, of which this is numbered 1022 of 2000.

It is signed by Chagall on the title page and dated 1974. The work includes 9 full page color lithographs by Chagall and printed by Mourlot. One of the lithographs is printed to the cover, the other 8 are bound in to the spine. It is bound in the original onionskin wrapper.

Senghor’s poems “envision[ed] the solidarity of all men." Léopold Sédar Senghor (1906-2001) was a Senegalese politician, cultural theorist, and poet. He was the first president of Senegal, serving from 1960 to 1980.

Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was a Belarusian-French artist. His given name was Moishe Segal and was born in Belarus which was part of the Russian empire. His art was influenced by Symbolism, Fauvism, Cubism, and Surrealism. The art critic, Robert Hughes, described Chagall as "the quintessential Jewish artist of the twentieth century.
