Description
This fine, first edition volume is Marc Chagall’s
Vitraux pour Jérusalem. It was published in Monte Carlo by A. Sauret in 1962.
The book is signed to flyleaf by Chagall and dated 1962. There are two original color lithographs and numerous in text illustrations. It is in original cloth binding with protective wrappers, illustrated dust jacket. The forward and explanations were by Jean Leymarie.
The work illustrated the patterns, drafts, and drawings for the 12 stained glass windows of the synagogue of the Jerusalem Hadassah Medical Center. The windows represented the 12 tribes of Israel.
Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was a Belarusian-French artist. His given name was Moishe Segal and was born in Belarus which was part of the Russian empire. His art was influenced by Symbolism, Fauvism, Cubism, and Surrealism. The art critic, Robert Hughes, described Chagall as "the quintessential Jewish artist of the twentieth century.
