This early American map is from Reverend Jebidiah Morse’s
The American Universal Geography, or, A View of the Present State of All the Empires, Kingdoms, States, and Republics in the Known World, and of the United States of America in Particular. This work was published in Boston, Massachusetts by Isiah Thomas and Ebenezer T. Andrews in 1796. The engraving work was done by Amos Doolittle.

Reverend Jebidiah Morse (1761-1826) was born to the Connecticut colony and published numerous maps. He was a geographer and produced numerous textbooks used for students in the newly established United States of America. These textbooks earned him the epithet, "Father of American geography." He was also the father of Samuel Morse, the telegraphy inventor and portrait painter.
