Description
This volume with 16 engravings is Henry Theodore Cheever’s
The whale and his captors; or, the whaleman’s adventures, and the whale’s biography, as gathered in the homeward cruise of the "Commodore Preble". The work was published in New York by Harper & Brothers in 1850. The volume features 314 pages and an engraved frontispiece as well. It is bound in original cloth with gold-embossed title to spine and gilt vignette to upper cover. The preface and one sheet are absent.
Henry Theodore Cheever (1814-1897) "describes the particulars of the ship’s homeward journey from the South Seas to Boston. The book talks about whaling off New Zealand, the Río de la Plata, and in Arctic waters. The history of whaling is also included, as is the peculiar vocabulary of whalemen." (Hill)
Condition report:
The work is in very good to excellent condition overall. There is some browning, toning, or foxing throughout. There is some rubbing to the binding. It is lacking the front endpaper.
