Description
This first edition work with 99 lithographs is Pierre Jacques Benoit’s
Voyage a Surinam, Description des possessions néerlandaises dans la Guyane. The work was published in Brussels in 1839 by De Wasme & Laurent (back of half-title: Imprimerie de Societé des Beaux-Arts).
There are 99 lithographs to 49 pages. The lithographs are on tissue mounted to woven paper. There is a historical survey of Surinam present before the plates. The volume is in contemporary binding with cloth spine and 3/4 marbled boards.
The work is especially significant for its ethnographic and sociological content. Many of the images depict daily life of the Indian, Jewish, Black, and Dutch populations of Surinam. There are also topographic views, botanical illustrations, and images of animals. The text covers population, customs, rituals, commerce, topography, and geography.
Pierre Jacques Benoit (1782-1854) was a Belgian artist. He travelled to Surinam in 1830 and rendered the images from life.
