Description
This lovely volume with 38 hand-colored lithographs is Henry Curtis’s
Beauties of the Rose, containing portraits of the principal varieties of the choicest perpetuals. With plain instructions for their cultivation. This first edition was published in Bristol and London by John Lavars and Groombridge & Sons between 1850 and 1853. It is two volumes bound to one in original green cloth with gilt-lettered spine. The work illustrated beautiful roses available through a commercial nursery.
Henry Curtis (1819-1889) was an English horticulturalist, writer, and illustrator. He was an owner of several English Roseries. The illustrations for the work were drawn by him from examples in his own gardens. The text is detailed with practical advise on the cultivation of the roses from his own experience.

Condition report:
The work is in very good to excellent condition overall. The spine has been re-cased but is lightly sunned. There is some light spotting to covers. There may be a few minor imperfections or fox marks to be expected with age. There may be some faint offset. Please review the image carefully for condition and contact us with any questions.
