Description
This magnificent hand-colored engraved map is from Alexis Hubert Jaillot & Pieter Mortier’s
Atlas nouveau contenant toutes les parties du monde. It was published in Paris by Pierre Mortier in 1694.
This is the first state of the map which was after Jaillot’s larger map originally created in 1674. Burden records five states of the map, of which this is the first. (Burden 700)
The depiction of California as an island was modeled after Nicolas Sanson’s map of North America published in 1656, with the remainder detailed from his map of 1669. It still held hope for a Northwest Passage as exploration continued in that area. The Mississippi River is labeled "Chucagua" and further to the east than prior maps. Florida is modeled after the work of De Bry and Le Moyne with an over-sized lake labeled "Apalache" (modern day Lake George). The Great Lakes were depicted opened up tot he west.
Alexis Hubert Jaillot (1632-1712) was an influential French cartographer. He earned the title of the first "Geographer to the King" under Louis XIV in 1686. He married Jeanne Berey whose father, Nicolas Berey, served as the King’s engraver and illuminator of maps. After the death of Nicholas II he took over the Berey printing house.
Pieter Mortier (1669-1711) was an Dutch mapmaker, engraver, and bookseller. He was the son of a French refugee. He was granted a privilege to publish French maps in the Netherlands in 1690, and printed his first work there in 1693. Mortier’s family continued to publish and sell books in the Dutch Republic for three generations.
