Description of the work:
This lovely pochoir lithograph is from George Barbier and Maurice Rostand’s
Panorama Dramatique: Casanova. Décors et Costumes par George Barbier. The work was published in Paris by Lucien Vogel in 1921. The illustrations were completed by Barbier from the 1919 production of Casanova.
“Between the end of the War and the later 1920s much of Barbier’s time was claimed by theatrical design. This new career began with Rostand’s Casanova… Other successes followed, and for a time he was the most sought-after costume designer in Paris, recognized as the theatrical artist who better than any other had captured the mood of the age.” (Gordon Ray)
George Barbier (1882-1932) was one of the greatest French artists of the early 20th century. He first exhibited in 1911 at the age of 29 where he gained many commissions to design costumes and illustrate works, fashion in particular. Barbier led a group nicknamed by Vogue "The Knights of the Bracelet" formed from artists from the Ecole des Beaux Arts and including Monvel, Brissaud, Iribe, Lepape, and Martin. Beyond his illustrations, Barbier created jewelry, glass and wallpaper design.
