This remarkable folio bull-fighting engraving is from Francisco Goya’s
La Tauromaquia. The work was published in 1921 by Circulo de Bellas Artes and limited to 200 copies. This is the fifth edition of the work, the last one made with the original plates.

The engravings were done by etching and aquatint in reddish sepia ink. There is a beautiful tissue overlay with decorative border and title for the plate. Each engraving features the blindstamp portrait pf Goya in the lower right corner which is indicative of the 1921 printing.

Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828) was an influential Spanish painter. He served as the appointed painter of King Charles IV and Queen Maria-Luisa. His art was influenced by Rembrandt and Velasquez. Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí both named Goya as inspiration for their artistic styles.
