Description of the work:
This folio lithograph is from Robert Hay’s
Illustrations of Cairo… The work was printed by C. Hullmandel in London in 1840 and published by Tilt & Bogue. The lithographs were drawn to stone by J. C. Bourne.
Many of the plates in the work depicted street life of the city at the time and are a nice glimpse of history as many of the buildings were demolished in the years following. Robert Hay’s contribution to Egyptian archaeology was even greater than his contemporary David Roberts. He completed two expeditions from 1824 to 1834.
