This handsome lithograph is from Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire & Frederic Cuvier’s
Histoire naturelle des mammiferes. The work was published in Paris by A. Belin between 1818 and 1842. The lithographs are after illustrations by Jean Charles Werner.

Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1772-1844) was a French naturalist. He established the principle of "unity of composition". He is considered a predecessor of the evo-devo evolutionary concept. He argued the possibility of transmutation of species over time through research in comparative anatomy, paleontology, and embryology. He was the father of Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire who followed in his studies of natural history and publishing.
