Description
This is a unique pairing of lithographs from John James Audubon’s Lockwood edition of
Birds of America. One is a test or early printing without color of the plate coupled with the finished lithograph in full color. These lithographs were published by Roe Lockwood between 1870 and 1871 in Philadelphia. This edition of the work is noted for it’s color / blocked background. J. T. Bowen served as the lithograph for the work.
John James Audubon (1785-1851) is perhaps the most famous of early American naturalists.
Birds of America is one of the best examples of hand-colored work in America and is highly collectible.
