This remarkable engraving is from Francois Valentijn’s
Ehemaligen Predigers auf den Ostindischen Inseln Amboina, Banda, & Abhandlung von Schnecken, Muscheln und Seegewächsen, welche um Amboina und den umliegenden Inseln gefunden warden. Als ein Anhang zu Georg Eberhard Rumphs Amboinischen Raritätenkammer… The work was published in Vienna by Krauss in 1773.

The engravings were completed by I. C. Berndt. This was the German edition to the supplement of Valentijn’s
Oud en Nieuw Oost Indien which also served as an appendix to Georg Eberhard Rumpf’s
D’Amboinsche Rariteitkamer.

Francois Valentijn (1666-1777) was a Dutch minister and naturalist. He was employed as a minister of the East Indies at 19, and befriended another naturalist Georg Eberhard Rumpf (Rumphius). He also served as an army chaplain on an expedition in easter Java.

Georg Eberhard Rumpf (1627-1702) was a German botanist and naturalist. He joined the military branch of the Dutch East India Company in 1652, and from there he devoted his life to the study of natural history in Moluccas, Indonesia.
