Description
This fine suite of three originally hand-colored lithographs is C. N. Newdegate’s
Sketches from the Washington Races in October 1840 by An Eye Witness. The work was published in London circa 1840. The lithographs are loose, as issued, and housed in original oatmeal printed paper folder in a black, fall-down-back box.
This was a rare suit of plates. Each plate features printed text below with explanatory rhymed quatrains. The images depict the course of a race run at Washington Race Course in Charleston, South Carolina in October of 1840. The Washington Race Course was the oldest race track in the world, having been established in 1735.

The work is in very good to excellent condition. There is some foxing to the folders. There may be a few minor imperfections to be expected with age. Please review the image carefully for condition and contact us with any questions.
