Description
These are two of the four volumes with 32 maps or engravings is part of Pieter van der Aa’s
Naaukeurige versameling der gedenk-waardigste zee en land-reysen na Oost en West-Indiën, Mitsgaders andere Gewesten, ter eerster Ontdekking (…) gedaan (…) The work was published in Leiden (Leyden) by the author in 1707.
The volumes are bound in original vellum. One volume details expeditions from 1608 to 1611 through Guiana and the East Indies. There are 15 maps or engravings. The second volume details expeditions from 1518 to 1519 through the East Indies as well as Cortez (Cortes) voyages in New Spain or Mexico. This volume includes 17 maps or engravings.
Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733) was a Dutch cartographer, publisher, and book seller. He was appointed to the bookseller trade from the age of 9 and went on to own a bookshop and auction house. He published many maps in his time, and became best known for his atlases on exploration and noted voyages. Much of what he published was composite atlases in which he utilized many other publishers plates and prints including Carel Allard and Frederik De Wit as well as his own work.

Condition report:
The work is in good ot very good condition overall. Some maps have been strengthened with tape to verso of fold. There is some occasional slight yellowing or foxing from age. There is some light staining to the binding. One map is completely loose from the volume documenting voyages from 1608 to 1611. There may be a few minor imperfections or faint fox marks to be expected with age. Please review the image carefully for condition and contact us with any questions.
