Description
These stunning two volumes with 12 folio color, stipple engravings is John Milton’s
Paradise Lost fully titled as
Le Paradis perdu, poëme. Édition en Anglais et en Français. Mit 12 farbigen Punktierstichen nach Schall. The work was published in Paris in 1792 by Defer de Maisonneuve.
The volumes are bound in contemporary brown calfskin, gilt shields, gilt ornamental borders, gilt top and inner edges, three gilt edges, and marbled endpapers. The binding is signed Relie par Bozerian indicating it was a master binding completed by Jean-Claude Bozerian the Elder (1762-1840).
There are 12 folio stipple engravings after Jean-Frederic Schall. The engravings were done by Colibert, Clement, Demonchy, and Gautier. This particular edition of
Paradise Lost is noted for the early use of the color engraving process that was developed by Francis Bartolozzi. It allowed for prints to be produced in multiple colors on one single inked plate.
