Description
This hand-colored lithograph is from Henry Leonard Meyer’s
Coloured Illustrations of British Birds & their Eggs. The work was published by Sotheran in 1853. It is considered one of the most valuable illustrated works on ornithology (Mullens & Swann).
Meyer was a recognized Dutch artist and naturalist. His ornithological drawings were made from nature as well as his own collection of birds. Meyer’s wife aided in the engraving and possibly the actual original drawings.
