Description of first work:

These two volumes are Captain Charles Wilkes’s
Narrative of the United States Exploring Expedition, during the Years 1838, 1839, 1840, 1841, 1842. In two volumes, with numerous engravings. The work was published in London in 1852 by Ingram, Cooke, and Co.

There are 11 engravings and numerous in text illustrations. The bindings are original brown embossed cloth, spines decorated & lettered in gilt.

Description of the second work:

This volume is George M. Colvocoresses’s
Four Years in the Government Exploring Expedition; commanded by Captain Charles Wilkes. This is the third edition of the work published in New York in 1855 by J. M. Fairchild & Co.

This is Colvocoresses’s account of his time on the Wilkes expedition. It is one of the less common works on this journey. There are 13 engravings in the work. It is bound in full calf with embossed details and gold palm details to front board and spine, gold gilt text and flourishes.
