This natural history lithograph is from Lorenz Oken’s
Abbildungen zu Oken’s allgemeiner Naturgeschichte fur alle Stande. The work was published in 1843 in Stuttgart by Hoffman.
The illustrations for this work were done by Johann Susemihl. It was a "once well-known and widely distributed popular natural history [work]." (Anker 375)
Lorenz Okenfuss [Oken] (1779-1851) was a German naturalist, botanist, biologist, and ornithologist. He applied the philosophical principles of Immanuel Kant to his studies in the physical sciences. He served as a member of the Royal Sweedish Academy of Sciences.
