Description

This handsome volume with 33 hand-colored folio lithographs is Dr. Anton Reichenow’s
Parrots of the World or
Vogelbilder aus fernen Zonen, Abbildungen und Beschreibungen der Papageien. This first edition work was published by Theodor Fischer in Kasse, Germany between 1878 and 1883. The volume is bound in later half calf with spine label.

The highly decorative prints feature striking, rich hand-coloring. Gustav Mutzel, a famous wildlife artist, is credited for the drawings in this work which were drawn in a lively manner with remarkable accuracy. The parrots featured were all the then known species from Australia, New Guinea, Asia, Philippines, Africa and America.

Dr. Anton Reichenow (1847-1941) was a German ornithologist and herpetologist. He worked for nearly 50 years and made great contributions to ornithological studies at the turn of the 20th century.
