Description
This hand-colored botanical engraving is from Michael Bernhard Valentini’s
Viridarium Reformatum, seu Regnum Vegetabile: Krauter Buch or [Newly Revised Garden of the Plant Kingdom: Herb Book]. The work was published by Valentini in Frankfurt in 1719.
Valentini’s work was largely based upon Johann Theodor de Bry & Matthaus Merian’s
Florilegium renovatum et auctum from 1641. It is widely agreed that he acquired de Bry & Merian’s plates to complete this work. He also added engravings after Mattioli, Bauhin and others for this "botanical library".
Johann Theodor de Bry was an etcher, engraver and publisher from an established family of publishers and artists. His son-in-law was Matthaus Merian, with whom he completed the
Florilegium of 1641.
