Description

This is beautifully colored seven volume set with 500 lithographs is John James Audubon’s
Birds of America, from Drawings made in the United States and Their Territories. The work was published by George R. Lockwood and published in New York between 1870 and 1871. Lockwood’s involvement has led this edition to commonly be known as the Lockwood Edition.

Prints and thus this beautiful complete set in truly wonderful condition of
Birds of America are amongst the most sought after and collectible of American prints.

John James Audubon (1785-1851) is perhaps the most famous of early American naturalists.
Birds of America is one of the best examples of hand-colored work in America and is highly collectible. The birds are hand-colored in this set with color printed backgrounds.

The Lockwood edition was the last octavo publication of Audubon’s
Birds of America. Richard B. Lockwood noted that at some point after 1870 the lithographed plates were destroyed when they fell through the floors in the Philadelphia publishing building. Thus, this work is the last true printing of Audubon’s octavos work.

The work is in very good to excellent condition overall. There is a small blindstamp to the title page. It is bound in the publisher\'s binding of brown morocco decorated in blind and lettered in gilt. The plates are in generally excellent condition.
