Description
This 13 volume work is Jacobus Gronovius’s
Thesaurus Graecarum Antiquitatum, in quo continentur Effigies Virorum ac Foeminarum Illustrium, quibus in Græcis aut Latinis monumentis aliqua memoriae pars datur, & in quocunque Orbis Terrarum spatio ob historiam, vel res gestas, vel inventa, vel locis nomina data, ac doctrinam meruerunt cognosci; etc. The work was published in Leiden by Vander Aa between 1697 and 1702.
The work was originally twelve volumes but is bound into thirteen here. It is bound in full contemporary embossed vellum. It has engraved titles with vignettes and engraved dedications. It features a portrait of Gronovius and 420 full page plates including some folding and a double page engraved maps. It also features numerous in text illustrations. Most of the illustrations depict Gods, Goddess, poets, philosophers, playwrights and historical characters of the ancient Greek world. The last volume is dedicated more to Roman and Etruscan history. It served as a massive encyclopaedia to ancient Greece.
Condition report:
The work is in very good to excellent condition. There is some splitting and minor signs of wear to the bindings. There is some minor spotting to the work, but mostly very handsome and clean with wide margins. There may be a few minor imperfections to be expected with age.
