Lot 58173:
Description
This volume with 48 originally hand-colored aquatint engravings is William Alexander’s
Costume of China. This is the first edition of the work and was published by William Miller in 1805. William Alexander (1767-1816) was an English painter, illustrator, and engraver.
The book illustrated scenes of Chinese life while Alexander served as draughtsman for the embassy of George Macartney in 1793. The embassy was working to open up trade between the nations, and while Macartney was largely unsuccessful, the cultural paintings Alexander brought back were of great interest in Britain showing the mysterious nation.
