Description

This rare, aquatint engraving is from Francisco Goya’s
Los Proverbios. Colección de diez y ocho láminas inventadas y grabadas al agua fuerte. It is from the second edition of the work published in Madrid in 1875 by Real Academia de Nobles Artes de San Fernando.

The engravings were done by etching, aquatint, and drypoint and printed on vellum paper. This edition was often published with the lithographed title of the first edition, dated 1864. This lot will include the matted title page as well with the lot. (Harris 248-265) The paper was the same as the first edition, but with some corrected errors to the plates. It was a very small printing for this edition and examples are "extremely rare." (Harris, II, p. 438)

Goya created the series of
Los Proverbios or
Los disparates between 1815 and 1825. The series was never published while Goya was alive due to political oppression. The images depict political issues, Spanish proverbs and sayings, as well as Spanish carnival.

Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828) was an influential Spanish painter. He served as the appointed painter of King Charles IV and Queen Maria-Luisa. His art was influenced by Rembrandt and Velasquez. Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí both named Goya as inspiration for their artistic styles.
