Description
This vibrant map of Australia was done by Leslie Macdonald Gill and titled
Australia / Her Natural and Industrial Resources. The map was published in 1942 in Leeds and London by Alf Cooke Ltd.
The large map is backed in linen. It depicts Australia’s resources including gold, silver, coal, sheep, cattle, sapphires, wheat, fruit, and more. The map was commissioned by the British Ministry of Information. It was intended to highlight Commonwealth countries natural resources and thus their economic contribution to the second World War.
Leslie Macdonald Gill (1884-1947) was a British cartographer, architect, and graphic designer. He is considered a pioneer of the pictorial map genre.
