Description of the work:
This historic engraving is from Mary Henderson Eastman’s
The American Indian Portfolio or
The American Aboriginal Portfolio. The work was published in Philadelphia in 1853 by Lippincott, Grambo.
The illustrations show Native American life and culture, specifically that of the Dakota Sioux. The scenes included dancing, burial, administering medicine, traveling, fishing, spearing muskrats, and dressing a buffalo skin.
"A beautiful book upon aboriginal manners and history, written by a lady and illustrated by her husband, both of whom were well fitted for the task by long residence among the Indians" (Field 477).
The steel engravings were after original illustrations by Mary’s husband, Captain Seth Eastman. They were engravings by C. Burt, J. Smillie, J.C. McRae, A. Jones, C. E. Wagstaff, & J. Andrews. Seth was an accomplished artist and topographical draftsman.
