Description
This beautiful parrot lithograph is from Charles de Souance’s
Iconographie des Perroquets. Non figurés dans les publications de Levaillant et de M. Bourjot Saint-Hilaire or
Iconography of Parrots not figured in the publications of Levaillant and M. Bourjot Saint-Hilaire with the cooperation of H.H. Prince Bonaparte and M. Emile Blanchard. The work was published in Paris by P. Bertrand between 1857 and 1858. Plates 1 to 15 in the work were colored by Emile Blanchard, the remaining plates were colored by Jean François Michel Daverne.
The work was intended as a continuation / completion of François Levaillant’s
Histoire naturelle des perroquets or
Natural History of Parrots (two volumes in 1801) and Alexandre Bourjot Saint-Hilaire (one volume in 1837). This volume was referred to as “a most important, systematic, and well-illustrated contribution to the literature of the Parrots.” (Wood) And "a necessary supplement to the works of Levaillant and Saint-Hilaire on Parrots." (F. Gallatin, Catalogue of a collection of books on ornithology, p. 123)
Baron Charles Gabriel Hubert de Souancé (1823-1896) was a Commissioner of the Navy and ornithologist. His work introduced the species discovered int he collection of Souancé’s uncle, the Prince of Essling, as well as the Jardin des Plantes in Paris and in various museums and naturalists travel discoveries.
