Description
This beautiful volume with 50 orchid lithographs is Paul Emile de Puydt’s
Les Orchidées … dessinées d’apres nature sous la direction de M. Leroy, dans les Serres de M. Guibert. The work was published in Paris by J. Rothschild in 1880. This is the first edition of the work that illustrated and described the orchids then in cultivation in Europe.
The volume is bound in contemporary green morocco-backed pebbled cloth boards, covers bordered in blind, spine with raised bands in five compartments, lettered in the second, others with a repeat decoration in gilt, silk moire end paper, gilt edges. It includes 50 orchid lithographs done by M. Leroy that were printed in color and finished by hand. There are numerous wood-cut illustrations within the text.
