These important work in six volumes with 164 engravings, maps, and plans is Awnsham & John Churchill’s
A Collection of Voyages and Travels, Some now first Printed from Original Manuscripts. The work was published in London for Awnsham & John Churchill in 1704 and by John Walthoe for Churchill in 1742. This is the first edition of Churchill’s monumental travels. The first four volumes were published in 1704 and the last two volumes published in 1742.
"This is a very valuable collection, both for its range of coverage and for the fact that it gives the original accounts." (Hill 295) There are two additional engraved titles, two engraved portraits, and 162 engraved plates, maps, and plans (some folding). There are numerous in-text illustrations throughout. The work is bound in full calf.
Churchill’s work was celebrated for its range of illustrations and original accounts. Some of the illustrations in the work pertained to the following voyages: Brawern and Herckemann’s Voyage to Chili in 1642 and 1643; Captain John Monck’s voyage in 1619 and 1620 to Hudson’s Straits, to discover a passage between Greenland and America; Nieuhoff’s voyages to Brazil and the East Indies; John Smith’s travels in Europe, Asia, Africa, and America from the years 1592 to 1629; the life of Columbus by his son; Barbot’s description of North and South Guinea; and an account of the discovery of America from Herrera’s History of the West Indies. The work is in very good to excellent condition overall. There is some scuffing to the bindings. The hinges have been reinforces, but original end papers present. Very clean throughout. There may be a few minor imperfections or faint fox marks to be expected with age.
