This originally hand-colored engraving is from the
The Naturalist’s Pocket Magazine; or, Compleat Cabinet of Nature. The work was published in London by Harrison, Clue & Co. between 1798 and 1800. There is no author credited for the work. It compiled text and plates from accounts from Buffon, George Edwards, George Shaw, James Bruce, Thomas Pennant, Maria Sybilla Merian, and more.

The work described many newly discovered species as well as extinct or endangered animals. This included the dodo, sukotyro, Siau Island tarsier, white rhinoceros, polar bear, Indian bustard, great green macaw, wild water buffalo, banded cotinga, Russian mink, and African grey parrot. It also included many early images of discoveries in New South Wales, Australia including short-beaked echidna, kangaroo, black swan, eastern quoll, waratah, and banksia, etc.
