This natural history lithograph is from Lorenz Oken’s <em>Abbildungen zu Oken’s allgemeiner Naturgeschichte fur alle Stande</em>. The work was published in 1843 in Stuttgart by Hoffman.<br><br>The illustrations for this work were done by Johann Susemihl. It was a "once well-known and widely distributed popular natural history [work]." (Anker 375)<br><br>Lorenz Okenfuss [Oken] (1779-1851) was a German naturalist, botanist, biologist, and ornithologist. He applied the philosophical principles of Immanuel Kant to his studies in the physical sciences. He served as a member of the Royal Sweedish Academy of Sciences.
