This illustrated volume is Sir Samuel White Baker’s
Eight Years’ Wanderings in Ceylon. This first edition was published in London in 1855 by Longman, Brown, Green and Longmans. It is bound in original gilt-blue cloth.

The work features 6 chromolithographs that illustrate hunting scenes and wildlife of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) that were drawn from Baker’s original paintings. He described the natural history, villages, peoples, and agriculture of the area.

Sir Samuel White Baker (1821-1893) was an English explorer, officer, naturalist, big game hunter, engineer, writer, and abolitionist. He serviced as Pasha and Major-General in the Ottoman Empire and Egypt and the Governor-General of the Equatorial Nile Basin (now South Sudan and Northern Uganda). He is noted for his exploration of the Nile and central Africa. He lived and traveled for many years in Ceylon (Sri Lanka).

Provenance: Signed front end with Baker but earlier names not legible. Library sticker for Robert & Maria Travis.
