This engraving is from Abraham Rees’s
The Cyclopaedia or Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, & Literature. The work was published between 1806 and 1820 in Philadelphia by Murray, Fairman, & Co.
Encyclopedias gained popularity in the early 1800s and became a wonderful way to disseminate information on everything from natural history to industrial revolution. Rees’s work is noted for its quality of engravings by noted engravers such as Wilson Lowry & John Farey, Jr.
