This rare, one-of-a-kind, signed, original charcoal drawing is by Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, "Un chat assis regardant vers la droite." It is charcoal on paper, signed in the lower right, done in either the late 1800s or early 1900s. The image was never published. It shows a seated cat looking to the right. Steinlen was noted for his cat illustrations.

Théophile Alexandre Steinlen (1859-1923) was a painter, engraver, illustrator, poster artist, sculptor, and caricaturist. He was the artist for the famed "Chat noir" poster. He was born in Lausanne, Switzerland, but moved to Paris in 1881 where he did most of his work. He lived with more than 20 cats on the rue Caulaincourt which he nicknamed "Cats Cottage." He received awards from the Society for the Protection of Animals.
